COURSE OVERVIEW

Using the power of Houdini and it's native fluid solver, PyroFX, Ruben will show you how to create state-of-the-art, high-impact pyrotechnic effects. You will cover some of the most commonly used visual effects along with learning everything from sculpting coloured smoke plumes through to burning down whole cities!

You will start with smaller simulations so that you are familiar with the solver before creating more complex setups. Using Houdini's flexibility to build custom shaders and microsolvers, you will be able to create highend FXs.

Ruben's overall aim is to help you push the boundaries of what's possible in a feature film production pipeline. You will also learn how to optimize your workflow and productivity.

Every shot will be approached from a professional production perspective utilizing industry based workflows to make the most of your visual effects. By the end of the course, you will be able to create spectacular visual effects shots and build your own custom otls for Pyro.

Ruben is currently an FX TD at Sony Pictures Imageworks Vancouver, working on the 2015 release: Pixels. Prior to that he was in Toronto working as a FX TD for Mr X. Inc where he starting working with Houdini and developing tools that he went on to use on Resident Evil, Retribution, Carrie, Pompeii and others.

Ruben has also worked at The Mill in London, contributing to productions such as Dredd, Merlin4, Sinbad, Dr Who and Sherlock.
WEEK BY WEEK OUTLINE
Week 1 - Colored Smoke and Vorticles

This lesson will cover how to setup custom shaders and how to add colors to our fluids.

You will also learn how to build microsolvers

Week 2 - Large scale oil and smoke plumes

There's an art to getting detailed and realistic smoke columns that typically, is overlooked. We will be looking at the different approaches to creating realistic effects such as these. It is a very indepth topic with many aspects to cover.

The aim is to prepare you to art direct the many looks you can create within PyroFX!

Week 3 - Pyroclastic Flow

This week we will focus on a favorite of effect of many blockbuster Hollywood films - a destructive pyroclastic cloud wiping out a house!

Week 4 - Fire - Part 1

This week is part one of how to deal with the fundamentals of creating realistic fire effects for feature film production.

We will start with small scale fires and over the next two weeks, we will advance to burning entire cities to the ground.

Week 5 - Fire - Part 2

This is week is part 2 of our focus on fire! This week should see us move into the area of whole cities burning to the ground.

Week 6 - Explosion Tools - Part 1

Over the next three weeks, we will over how to build several OTLS to generate powerful explosions involving several simulations: fire, smoke, dust, shockwave, fireball, etc..

This is a very complex part of the course and requires a full three weeks of concentrated learning.

Week 7 - Explosion Tools -Part 2

This is the second week of out learning how to building OTLS. We will continue to build on what we have learnt so far and head towards a final explosive week!

Week 8 - Explosion tools -Part 3

During the final week of the course we take everything we have learned and turnit up to eleven!

FXPHD - VFX302 Tornado Destruction Project, Part 2

This is the second in our advanced series of courses which complete a complex visual effects scene, starting from the effects plate all the way to the tweaks of the final comp. Based upon a suggestion from an fxphd member, the course will start with the clean plate, add a remote mountain town, and then build a CG Tornado to destroy it. Numerous applications will be used throughout the course, including 3D Equalizer, Maya, Houdini, Arnold Renderer, and NUKE.

The lineup of artists teaching this course is stellar. Serving as vfx supervisor and matte painting for the course is artist Ludovic Iochem, who leads our digital matte painting curriculum. Joining him are Charles Chorein (imdb), who will be handling look development plus lighting and Olivier Ryard (imdb) will be creating the FX of the Tornado in Houdini.

Class 1: First lesson for lighting the barnPole for vfx302. We gonna see how to lighting a scene step by step and split every elements in different render layers in Maya.
Class 2: Lighting for vfx302. This time we have the simulation from FX in Houdini. we will see how to manage Alembic files in Maya update the scene and lookDev and setup a render without noise. we finish with a lighting slap in Nuke to see the final result.
Class 3: In this lesson we have a look at the lookDev setup in Houdini for the FX. We will see how to set up a scene from scratch, create a lightRig for the lookDev of the tornado, adjust the shader to integrate and configure the global setting for rendering Volume in Houdini.
Class 4: Final lighting. Now we have the Tornado setup in Houdini, we will see how to improve the lighting and split it on different render layer, finals the adjustment for the shader and preparer everything in Nuke for the compositing.
Class 5: Digital matte painting: the village
Class 6: Digital matte painting: the sky
Class 7: Digital matte painting: the environment
Class 8: Presentation: We now have all the CG passes of the tornado and the pole barn at our disposal to be comped seamlessly in Nuke over the live plate. This class aims to give you an understanding of what a compositing workflow can be, to help you create you own live plate/CG project.
Class 9: After combining all the CG/FX passes, we will now concentrate on making the shot look more dramatic. By adding 2D volumetric rays and changing the BG’s sky. We will also learn how to make nuke load up your assets if they are opened on a different machine.
Class 10: For this final class, we will focus on adding a little more realism to the plate by creating some motion to the tree. We will use the iDistort node controlled by different Noise nodes. We will also learn how to solve the lens distortion.
