This is the first Tutorial from a series that will establish the Project Fuze. The idea of Fuze is to show you all my CG workflow from modeling to final render making this SF Gun model from Johnson Ting Neo Japan Universe.


It will be split into 6 parts. This first one is about custom Maya, well know our basics modeling tools, set shortcuts and little scripts, organisation... I start everything from scratch with you in order to share all my knowledge and let's you understand as much as possible my philosophy about modeling, especially for HardSurface stuffs.


This Tuto is recommended for a beginner/intermediate level in Maya. I don't explain basics like interface, navigation etc... but essential modeling tools such as Bevel, Extrude... and I explain in depth how they work, the differences between maya version, with other 3D packages etc...

That's for the first 2H part. The second part is focus on practice of the grenade modeling.

Here I work with Maya 2014 and 2015, but this can be reproduced in any Maya version and in any other 3D software with similar modeling tools.

For texturing I choose SubstancePainter, even if here we are'nt with a game asset but with a highPoly, I wanted to use the power of procedural texturing to speed-up the repetitive texture process. Thanks to SubstancePainter, we will only texture the head of the HulkBuster and it'll automatically texture all the body's 20k texture.

4 - Shaders and Render - 1H30

I choose Corona Render for Cinema4D to make the render. First to test this new render engine and because it's totally free in the version I use. The speed of this renderer is incredible and allow me to quickly render HD animation.

I'll show you how I build my shaders using Substance output in order to have a strong nice metal look and build some layered shaders with Blend Material and mask.

5 - Compositing - 1Hr

Finnally a bit of compositing with Nuke to add final touchs to the render animation. How to compose my .Exr MultiPass, subtle detail like Glow, CC, Denoise Glossy, Grain...

The only thing standing in our way is the time required to hone our sculpting skill set. So let’s start practicing!

Every now and then I try to take a step back from the grind of technical production work and simply focus on the artistic skill set that is digital sculpting. No thought of retopology for deformation in mind, no consideration of map baking for efficient rendering, just pure sculpture.

3D-Coat is a commercial digital sculpting program from Pilgway designed to create free-form organic and hard surfaced 3D models from scratch, with tools which enable users to sculpt, add polygonal topology (automatically or manually), create UV maps (automatically or manually), texture the resulting models with natural painting tools, and render static images or animated "turntable" movies.

The program can also be used to modify imported 3D models from a number of commercial 3D software products by means of plugins called Applinks.[1] Imported models can be converted into voxel objects for further refinement and for adding high resolution detail, complete UV unwrapping and mapping, as well as adding textures for displacement, bump maps, specular and diffuse color maps. A live connection to a chosen external 3D application can be established through the Applink pipeline, allowing for the transfer of model and texture information.

3D-Coat specializes in voxel sculpting and polygonal sculpting - using Dynamic Patch Tessellation[2] technology and polygonal sculpting tools.

In the latest release, users can increase their productivity by using Auto-retopology, a proprietary skinning algorithm.[3] With minimal input from the user, this technology generates an accurate and functional polygonal mesh skin over any voxel sculpture, (composed primarily of quadrangles), which is the standard that is widely used in 3D production studios. Normally, this kind of polygonal topology must be painstakingly produced by hand.[4][5]
