Blender NPR - The Many Secrets of NPR Part 1

$

0
It is no secret that the most sought-after secrets are those hidden in plain sight. Revealing them often requires an exchange that those secrets become no secret. It’s like a car, once paid, it loses half of its initial presumed value, which is no secret, but a car isn’t a secret. A secret that unlocks other secrets on the other hand is a secret worth seeking and keeping.

Yet secrets so hidden and not utilized are as useful as a one thousand horse power Ferrari hidden in a junkyard piled with other glorified… junk, and hence this course.

In this first part of the series, we’ll look at few fundamental NPR secrets. They will enhance your NPR artworks greatly. Of course they will not be outlined here, they are secrets. Let me give you a clue. The image above is related to those secrets, else, what else the image does.

Lynda – Photoshop: Create a Portrait Collage

A collage is a common way to creatively combine multiple portraits into a single image. It's used for everything from family pictures to band publicity photos. But portrait collages are also a great way to show multiple "sides" of one person: a kid at play, an artist at work, or an athlete at the top of his game.

In this course, photographer, author, and educator Seán Duggan steps you through the process of using Photoshop to combine a set of portraits into a collage. He uses the compositing features of Photoshop, including layers, selections, masks, and Smart Objects, in combination with the transform and tonal styling tools for maximum creative impact. These techniques will help you build a new portrait collage from scratch and discover some new tricks in Photoshop along the way.

Topics include:

Choosing images
Arranging layers
Retouching and masking
Blending layers
Pulling it all together

Lynda – After Effects Motion Graphics: Creating Fire and Brimstone Type Animation

$

After Effects is a very versatile tool. On one hand, it's a powerful compositing and post-production program. On the other hand, it is capable of producing some very impressive 3D visuals, with the help of plugins like FreeForm Pro.

In this course, you'll learn to take advantage of these powerful features. The first half of this course uses AE as if it were true 3D software, producing a unique 3D landscape—a volcano spouting fire and brimstone—rendered into several image sequence passes. In the second half, author Ran Ben Avraham shows how to use AE's powerful compositing abilities to combine the render passes, add environment particles, build 3D text, and use a few post-production tricks to produce this "volcanic" scene.

Like all of our project-based learning experiences, each step of the process is rich with object lessons that are applicable to scenarios the motion design artist will face in real-world productions.

Topics include:

Working with the FreeForm Pro plugin
Modeling the volcano
Adding lava flow to the color and displacement maps
Animating the camera in the scene
Filling in gaps with FreeForm Pro
Lighting the scene
Rendering multiple passes
Compositing the render passes
Creating a smoke particle system
Building 3D text
Adding effects
Time remapping

https://www.fxphd.com/details/?idCourse=338

Everyone wants good audio, but don't always know the steps to get there. This course takes a practical, hands on approach to audio post production. From dialog cleanup and noise removal to sound design and mixing. Working in Adobe Audition CS6, we work through specific project based scenarios to add practical tools for you to use on everyday projects.

We start off with an introduction to the new Adobe Audition CS6 interface, preferences and features as well as get familiar with the import / export workflow. Next we dig into our first project which is an emergency dialog cleanup on some exterior shots. The location recording has some challenges for us to fix. Then we clean up the voice on a promo and work it in the mix against music. We take a character animation and bring it to life with sound. Then we take the AFX218 trailer project and creating the sound track for the trailer.

Ryan first got his start at Avenue Edit after graduating Columbia College Chicago with a BA in Film / Video with a concentration in Audio. He has over 20 years experience working with sound, and 10 years in the advertising audio post industry. Ryan's clients range from national television ads for Allstate and Aleve, to music video sound design for recording artist Matt and Kim, to viral movie tie-in for the film Contagion for Participant Media.

FXPHD - DOP220 Making a Dramatic Difference

https://www.fxphd.com/details/?idCourse=472

This course is designed to dramatically improve your next film by showing you the professional secrets in blocking out your action, shooting for coverage in the edit and finally improving the quality of your recorded sound.

The reality of filming Indie films today is that it is possible to get great images with accessible cameras - especially given their dramatic ISO sensitivity and the great range of affordable lenses. Most online discussions and blogs focus on new gear and cool accessories and yet this is not what makes a production engaging and interesting. Today almost anyone can produce a single ‘cool’ shot - but what about actually making an interesting story? How about making the narrative flow so the scenes are interesting, easy to follow and engaging?

The reality is that the gear is fun, but increasingly easy enough to solve - but how to express a narrative that is emotionally engaging and really holds the viewer is just either ‘too hard’ to discuss or can’t be explained in a 2 min sound bite demo. With this course we will show you the professional tricks and approaches in solving these harder but much more important issues.

While every script is different there are three big things you can do to make your film projects 100% stronger:
Improve the blocking and camera work to help underline the dialogue. Often times a scene is not even really about what is being said but rather its sub-text. As a Director and DOP you need to visually explain the meaning and amplify the emotional content. The actual words being spoken seem like the focus but often times they are not, how you frame, how you place the actors relative to each other is critical but not given enough importance in Indie films.

Coverage: It is said there is the film you shoot and the film you actually have in the edit. If you have ever been boxed in during an edit you will know that coverage is so important and a film with good material can come alive in the edit - if the editor has the right material to work with. On set coverage seems almost like a luxury, in post it can be the difference between just making it work and making the film sing ! Ben will show you how to plan and shoot for coverage and what a vast difference it can make.

Sound, as an audience we can love to have dark and mysterious imagery, but we lose patience in a flash if the sound it poor or hard to understand. Good audio on dialogue - recorded and mixed correctly will make your productions 10x more professional and most importantly engaging to your audience. You owe it to your production to get the audio right, and here Ben will be joined by experts from RODE audio who will help us understand the latest techniques and share some very cool tips on both location and studio audio recording

FXPHD - DOP219 Lighting with Natural Light

$

https://www.fxphd.com/details/?idCourse=456

This course is designed to show how to light subjects and drama with natural light, led by DOP Ben Allan. It is wrong to think that because you are not lighting with electric lights you are not lighting a scene, but with creativity and a solid technical understand lighting with natural light can be incredibly rewarding and even a very fast way to shoot.

The reality of today's working environment is that you are very likely to be presented with opportunities even if you seek them. From interviews to drama, interior and exterior setups, and interestingly night shots are all candidates for using available light in dramatic and original ways.

While it may be fast to film with natural light, it is not always easy when you can't just dim your lights, or move them relative to your subject. When done well, natural light can add incredible realism to a scene, it can make your scenes dramatic and natural. But it can also present real problems to overcome, extreme contrast ratios, shift source directions, glare, unwanted reflections, and a lack of the sort of modeling control we have with area lights. If you have seen any of Ben Allan's courses with Mike Seymour, you will know that the way we address these issues is by having Mike torture Ben. Mike will set complex and perhaps seemingly impossible lighting tasks - which in the past Ben has seemingly solved with easy, but this term he may just be stumped!
