Joel Grimes - Post Edgy Photoshop Techniques

Duration: 24 minutes

Video: m4v 960 x 540

After receiving hundreds of emails requesting that Joel reveal his post photoshop techniques,
he has finally put together a video tutorial that goes through step by step the exact process
he uses for all his gritty edgy images. This 25 minute video also covers some amazing new techniques
showing how he knocks out his subjects and place them into a background along some additional
atmospheric enhancing techniques. Learn in a fraction of the time it took him to develop his post techniques.

Keep in mind that there are hundreds of ways to achieve any given post processing technique
and that this video covers how Joel works in Photoshop to achieve the gritty edgy look used
in his images and assumes the viewer has some basic knowledge of Photoshop. The objective of this video
is to give you a creative tool to fulfill your vision as an artist and as with any process there are creative
decisions that only you can make. This video is recorded on a Mac using Photoshop.
Joel Grimes is a commercial advertising photographer based out of Denver, Colorado.
He is best known for his edgy sports, action and beauty composites where he combines
studio shots with location shots (mostly HDR) into incredible images.

He has worked for clients like AT&T, Case Logic, Goldman Sachs, Kodak, Nikon USA,
Pentax USA, Philip Morris, Red Bull, Sony, Visa, Volvo, US Postal Service, Wacom and many others.

Apart from being a successful photographer, Joel is also a great teacher who gives a lot
to the photography community in his tutorials, workshops and seminars.

The Topic

Compositing is a photographic technique by which several image elements that are shot separately are combined into a single image. In most cases, the photographer tries to create a believable final image that looks as realistic as possible, making the viewer believe that the scene was actually set up and photographed as it is presented in the image.

This technique has become a very important tool in commercial photography as it makes the process of creating an image very flexible. The elements (typically a subject in the foreground and a background scene) can be shot independently, and different subjects and backgrounds can be combined.

The challenge however, is to get visual properties like the perspective, the lighting, and the color balance right so that they are consistent across the entire image and allow for a perfect illusion.
The Tutorial

In this video, Joel shows you his entire workflow for creating the image you see at the top of this article. He is not holding back anything here. He starts with the RAW image from a portrait shoot of his subject and takes you through the key processing steps in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop. You’ll learn how to go back and forth between these two key programs, use blending modes, adjustment layers in Photoshop and a few tricks to adjust the skin-tones and the overall look of your image.

Then, Joel shows you how to extract the model from the portrait shoot with the latest tools in Photoshop. You’ll learn how to use the Quick Select tool, Refine Edge and the Brush tool to create selections, including the most difficult parts of an image: the hair.

Next, you’ll learn how to combine your subject with an HDR background image. Joel explains how to create a consistent believable composite that “sell your audience that the subject is actually standing in front of that background”. He takes you through the steps of cleaning up and refining your subject’s mask. Then, he explains how to use techniques like dodge and burn to get the lighting right and create a perfect illusion. Joel even creates additional lighting effects that are consistent with the rest of the image.

Other Things You’ll Learn

*How to use the liquify tool to work on little imperfections of your model
*How to create an atmospheric mood on the background (glowing foggy look and light rays) to separate your subject from the background
*How to use Photo Filter adjustment layers to match the color balance of the background with the color balance of your subject

The Style of Teaching

Joel is a teacher at heart and it shows in this video. But he is also a working professional with a sense for efficiency. Therefore, he does things fast. Some knowledge about Photoshop and its tools is required to follow along at Joel’s speed. Make sure you use the rewind button of your video player if he’s too fast. But despite the speed, he takes the time to explain things in a very accessible way.

THE SECOND STOP IN A GAME CHARACTER’S JOURNEY

The second stage of our game character’s production is Sculpting. This is where we quickly and artistically build out a 3D translation of the 2D artwork. Sculpting is so valuable for this second stage because of its flexibility and artistic inclination.

AUTHENTIC TRANSLATION

Sometimes this transition from 2D to 3D can result in a model that’s inspired by the art rather than being a realization of the art. As a stylized character, The Wrangler’s design is very specifically crafted. So we’re not going to treat it like a suggestion. Rather we’re going to do our best to fulfill it truthfully.

It’s our job as 3D artists to accurately capture the design in three-dimensional space.

SCULPTING WITH GAMES IN MIND

It’s important to remember the purpose of your sculpture. With games, this means the character will be retopologized for optimum mesh performance and the detail harvested in the form of normal map textures. Therefore it’s important to shape your character so it works best in the game production pipeline.

solidThinking Evolve allows industrial designers to develop forms faster, using either Windows or Mac OS X. It enables you to capture an initial sketch, explore styling alternatives, and visualize products with realistic renderings generated in real time. Evolve provides organic surface modeling and parametric control, with NURBS-based surfaces and solids and a unique ConstructionTree history feature. It frees designers from the constraints of engineering-oriented CAD tools, while allowing the export of digital models required by others in the product development process.

What is Inspire?

solidThinking Inspire enables design engineers, product designers, and architects to create and investigate structurally efficient concepts quickly and easily. Traditional structural simulations allow engineers to check if a design will support the required loads. Inspire enhances this process by generating a new material layout within a package space using the loads as an input. The software is easy to learn and works with existing CAD tools to help design structural parts right the first time, reducing costs, development time, material consumption, and product weight.

The latest release of Inspire, 'Inspire 2016' introduces multiple new enhancements including:

PROMOS

A short story...
Last weekend, I bought this great, pricey package just to share here and at Zonegfx. Same day, I bought the Vintage Ice Cream Van to fill a reqest. And just to say thank you for all the help I've received over the years at Peers and Persia.
I also shared them at Zonegfx. Well....
I had a very bad experience where I had done the required setup to share, almost like setting up torrents. Two minutes and the process was complete. After a rather lengthy wait for approval to make my file live and ready to share, they pulled it. The next thing I know, my post is gone and a moderator has posted MY Kenji bundle, not once but two times! The way I see it, because this bundle 'was' impossible to find online, they had to allow me to post it live, then when they were finished grabbing it from me, they pulled it, now free to claim it as theirs, and rank the bank!
And every public statement I left immediately got yanked as well. I told them to delete my account, seeing as they're so damn good at it and GO FUCK THEMSELVES!. And After earning nearly 2k in spending points in under three days! Damn!
Too bad too. They had a ton of cool shit. Well...

Enjoy!
