Lynda - Creating a Short Film 05 Directing

0
0
Directing movies means being in charge of all creative decisions on a movie set: performance, wardrobe, lights, camera movement, color palette, music, and the overall tone of the film. Some directors focus on directing actors, while others focus on telling stories, building explosive moments of action, or creating visual art. Here filmmaker Chad Perkins explains the role and responsibilities of a director on a small, independent film.

Watch and learn how to shoot a script, using visual motifs, atmospherics, framing, and different types of shots to tell the film's story. Find out how to give direction to your crew and be a good leader, while staying on budget and on schedule. Plus, get tips to improve shots during retakes or in post, and to become a better director, storyteller, and communicator.

Note: Like the rest of the Creating a Short Film series, this course was shot during the production of The Assurance. It offers a unique window into the actual struggles and challenges filmmakers have to overcome to get films made. Find the rest of the courses in the series on Chad's author page.

Topics include:

What a director does
Interpreting the script
Scouting locations
Choosing the tone and theme of the film
Using motifs
Shaping the story through visuals
Being a good leader on set
Respecting budgets and schedules
Planning shots
Moving the camera: on a tripod or dolly or in handheld shots
Using rolling takes
Framing shots
Adding atmospherics
Directing in post-production
Becoming a better director

Steampunk Soldiers: Uniforms & Weapons from the Age of Steam (artbook)

0
0
A book that can be used as a reference and inspiration for concept artists.

-------
Steampunk Soldiers is a unique pictorial guide to the last great era of bright and colorful uniforms, as well as an important historical study of the variety of steam-powered weaponry and equipment that abounded in the days before the Great War of the Worlds.

Between 1887 and 1895, the British art student Miles Vandercroft travelled around the world, sketching and painting the soldiers of the countries through which he passed. In this age of dramatic technological advancement, Vandercroft was fascinated by how the rise of steam technology at the start of the American Civil War had transformed warfare and the role of the fighting man. This volume collects all of Vandercroft's surviving paintings, along with his associated commentary on the specific military units he encountered.

Producing Animation, 2nd Edition 2nd Edition

You have a useful library of books covering the tools, techniques and aesthetics of animation, but you've been asked to put your production and creative skills to the test to produce a theatrical feature film or to deliver 52 episodes of a television series with only 18 months in the schedule.

Producing Animation is your answer. Written by Catherine Winder and Zahra Dowlatabadi and edited by Tracey Miller-Zarneke, Producing Animation is a comprehensive guide to the production industry. Already a relied upon resource by professionals and students alike, this book covers the process from script to screen while defining the role of the producer at each phase. The second edition features new content such as sidebars on key topics from industry experts, discussions on CG, 2D and stereoscopic production processes, and an overview on marketing and distributing your project.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Producing Animation is an invaluable resource for students, executives, artists, and live action producers who may dream about producing an animated project. From preparing a pitch through final release print, everything you need to know about producing animation is discussed. Reading it is almost as if you had a mentor to guide you through the complex and often frustrating process of producing animation. If you are planning a project, this is an itemthat should be added to your budget and it is likely that you will be able to save many multiples of its cost in no time."--Pamela Kleibrink Thompson, TheScratchPost.com

"While there's a useful library of books covering the tools, techniques and aesthetics of animation, until now there's been scant coverage of the highly refined skill sets needed to produce animation. This up-to-date volume provides A to Z counsel about putting together a medium to large scale TV series or feature projects, with focus on cel and CGI animation genres. The writing is colloquial and peppered with authentic examples drawn from the adventures and misadventures of two experienced practitioners. There are hugely valuable tips for the smaller scale, independent writer/producer/animator who wants to develop his or her production chops."--Kit Laybourne, Head of Animation at Oxygen Media and author, The Animation Book

"Once in a while, we come across books that are helpful both for those who are just starting out in the toon business and professionals with lots of experience under their belts. Winder and Dowlatabadi, who are seasoned veterans of the business, have put together a helpful primer based on their many years in the toon trenches..In short this is the book every animation producer in town should read before they make their next movie in 2012."--Animation Magazine December

Toolbar Creator

This program allows the user to create multiple custom toolbars that can potentially be used with any program (as long as the program accepts keyboard hotkeys).

You should be able to extract the folder from the zip file and put the folder from the zip file anywhere on your computer and double-click the file "Your Toolbar.exe" (which you can rename any way you want) to use it. (Make sure to extract the files first as they won't run correctly if you leave them in the zip file.)

Essentially everything about the toolbars can be customized. Just launch the Toolbar Options via the menu on the top left button or by right-clicking on the tray icon, and start customizing. There is a lot in there, and I don't have time to prepare instructions but I think the info that is provided is mostly self-explanatory. There are two types of toolbars: the first type has two columns of buttons and each column can have a maximum of 10 buttons; the second type can be designed on a 10 x 10 button canvas with buttons of different sizes.

This could be a life saver if you work on tablets like the Microsoft Surface or even a cintiq.

Lynda - Creating a Short Film: 03 Pre-Production

0
0
Creating a Short Film is a 13-part training series that shows the actual struggles and challenges filmmakers have to overcome to get films made. Author Chad Perkins and his team made a short film, The Assurance, and documented the process: from writing and directing to editing and screening the film. This installment covers pre-production—because there are so many preliminary steps that go into a successful film, and they happen long before the cameras start rolling.

Learn how to prepare the assets, such as shooting scripts, storyboards, and shot lists. Discover how to schedule and budget a shoot, and keep costs down while leaving room for the creative decisions that need to be made along the way. Find out how to hire a crew, scout and secure locations for each scene, and prepare props, sets, and wardrobe for actors. Learn what you need to do to keep your people safe, and the things you can prepare ahead of time to make sure production and post-production run smoothly.

There are more filmmaking tips to be had! Make sure to watch the first installment to learn about the background of the project and to get an overview of the role of the producer. Look for the follow-up episodes to learn more about writing, directing, working with actors, editing and visual effects, and everything else that goes into filmmaking.
Topics include:
Turning the script into a shooting script
Working with script breakdown software such as Adobe Story
Creating storyboards and a shot list
Scheduling the shoot
Budgeting the shoot and post-production
Hiring a crew
Preparing sets and costumes
Scouting locations
Creating props
Preparing assets for post-production

When working with digital image files, it is essential to know the differences between each one, so you know when to use them. The main difference between files formats is how they are used when designing for the web and the outcome they produce. One produces highly optimized simple graphics, another is used for most images, and the third option is used for complex graphics, gradients and transparency.
