Show Your Work!: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered

In his New York Times bestseller Steal Like an Artist, Austin Kleon showed readers how to unlock their creativity by “stealing” from the community of other movers and shakers. Now, in an even more forward-thinking and necessary book, he shows how to take that critical next step on a creative journey—getting known.

Show Your Work! is about why generosity trumps genius. It’s about getting findable, about using the network instead of wasting time “networking.” It’s not self-promotion, it’s self-discovery—let others into your process, then let them steal from you. Filled with illustrations, quotes, stories, and examples, Show Your Work! offers ten transformative rules for being open, generous, brave, productive.

In chapters such as You Don’t Have to Be a Genius; Share Something Small Every Day; and Stick Around, Kleon creates a user’s manual for embracing the communal nature of creativity— what he calls the “ecology of talent.” From broader life lessons about work (you can’t find your voice if you don’t use it) to the etiquette of sharing—and the dangers of oversharing—to the practicalities of Internet life (build a good domain name; give credit when credit is due), it’s an inspiring manifesto for succeeding as any kind of artist or entrepreneur in the digital age.

Drawing Trump, a spot illustration for The Weekly Standard. (Get a behind the scenes look at what it is like to create a quick caricature illustration for a magazine.)

Jason Seiler had to do an illustration of Donald Trump for The Weekly Standard and only had one day to do it. This video is a great way to see what it is like to take on such a quick turnaround for a magazine. Hang out with Jason in his studio as he gathers references, takes his own references, and follow along as he starts with quick loose sketching and then watch him bring it to a finish after getting the approval from the art director! (video length is 3hrs)

The Gnomon Workshop - Creature Rigging for Production

Duration 7h 38m Project Files Included MP4

Character rigging is a process that starts the moment the design of a character is established. To get the most out of a character it involves a lot of communication between the modeler, the rigger and, whenever possible, the animator. This tutorial begins by working with the basic blockout ZBrush file from Ben Erdt’s tutorial “Creature Modeling for Production” to start generating the skeleton. The rig is set up in several components, divided by the limbs, and aims to create a fully functional body rig before the modeler is done creating a clean topology. The components make use of IK, FK and Spline-IK systems with blending where necessary. Some python code is shared to speed up some of these workflows. Tools that are not part of the original Maya tool-set will be used to create controls and help out with skinning the basic blockout mesh. This will then become the base information used in the final mesh, where a second phase of rigging starts: adding the extra detail controls on the character. The end-result contains a rig that is easy to use for an animator and which can be directly used in a game engine.

When working with nearly any CAD package, printing can result in many issues. Understanding how to automate this process improves both user efficiency and output quality. If you're already familiar with basic commands in Bentley MicroStation V8i, the 2D and 3D CAD and information-modeling program, this course can help you print more efficiently using the software.

Jeanne Aarhus begins by using a customized environment to show how simple plotting can be. She then demonstrates how to automate the print environment to improve project efficiency. Jeanne also explains how to use the software to generate output using different types of models, including design, drawing, and sheet models. After completing this course, you're prepared to generate simple 2D and 3D drawing output to various output types using a customized print environment.

Topics include:

Using Windows printers
Using models to print
Using the sheet model at 1:1 and 1:50
Using cut sheets
Batch printing with the Print Organizer
