If you're a print designer, illustrator, or video editor who tends to shy away from motion graphics, or just a newbie, the Monkey Suite will help cut some corners and get you up and running very quickly. For those who have a good grip on After Effects, you'll find they can be great timesavers for some of your projects.
We'll be going over several fast and easy ways to create complex kinetic typography and well as instantly adding motion to multi-layered imagery created in Photoshop or Illustrator.
We'll also take you through several strategies to get your type to auotmatically sync to voice overs, beats or lyrics without having to do it by hand.
Students will create an animation of a quote by Bruce Lee. They will use trial versions of TypeMonkey and LayerMonkey to explore how they work and how they can save hours (or days) by learing these simple yet powerful tools. All material need to do the project will be supplied.
I recommend taking an introductory course for After Effects on Skillshare before taking TypeMonkey for After Effects, but its not required. Also, you might want to check out The Ultimate Guide to Kinetic Type in After Effects to learn the traditional way as well. Both techniques come in handy.

PAINTING WITH AMBIENT OCCLUSION
Ambient occlusion (AO) is best described as the soft, subtle shadowing that appears between close objects and other tight spaces where light can’t easily reach. When emphasized in the painting process, AO gives art a very distinct look — almost like a computer-generated 3D model.

1. After doing a few thumbnails to explore lighting possibilities for the piece, start off by drawing decently clean line art and reducing the opacity. Below that, begin working on the ambient occlusion layer.
2. To render AO, use a soft black brush on edges, and then a hard eraser to clean them up. Slowly work around the piece, fleshing out forms and managing overlap until, eventually, everything occupies a place within the three-dimensional space of the scene. The finished AO layer is set to Multiply.
3. Flat colors are set beneath the AO layer and painted with an opaque brush. Every element of the painting, from skin to clothing, should be on a separate layer. The values used are darker than what will appear in the final piece — this step is intended to simulate how the scene appears when in shadow.
4. Light sources are added, one by one, on Overlay layers above the AO and flat colors. Light is literally painted onto objects with a white brush. Later, they can be adjusted by using the Hue/Saturation window.
5. Once all the lighting is set, the final step is to polish the painting through post-production, the options of which include: over-painting, color adjustment layers, and/or screen effects.

ORDER IS EVERYTHING!

From top to bottom, the stack will be performed in order of the sequence. Modifiers also make life easier as you as you go about creating meshes.

The first example is the skin modifier. The skin has proved to be irreplaceable to be however there are some caveats to the initial tool behavior that can be improved through modifier stack ordering.

Initially the skin hits very hard on the areas of extrusion resulting in a harder shape than the one possibly wanted. Adding a subdivision below helps a little but not enough. However adding a subdivision before and after the skin gets the behavior much closer to how I want.

The next example is the modifier sphere. Sometimes I’ll set up modifiers on the sphere to test out the behavior, then transfer that to actual mesh. For this I have planes that have been cut with the knife tool (K-key) and the split tool (Y-key). Just through this workflow you can see the amount or work being reduced for creating paneled sci-fi modular assets. Even transferring the modifiers to a ship you can see how the work is almost taking care of itself.

Ctrl+L brings up the linked menu where you can link materials, animation data and in this case modifiers.

The final example is going to be my creation of a tire. By stacking modifiers in the proper order I am able to:

1. Model a single tread flat.
2. Bend it into shape using a lattice
3. Array it out 48 times
4. Curve it around a circle from the curve >> circle menu
5. Lattice the overall shape to allow tire deformation after the other modifiers

The combinations you can use are endless. Its just a matter of deciding what you want done to the mesh and at what stage. I hope this was able to shed some lights on modifiers since they are such an important part of my workflow. If you discover cool combinations let me know!
